On the leaf of the lotus plant you find the bubble, water bubble shining brilliantly - it is not permanent, it vanishes. The human life is not permanent. The whole life is full of fields of attachment. It is all the fields of grief.
Human life passes through different stages. In every stage man embraces only falsehood, untruth [asathya]. He only expects ??? of unrighteousness [adharma]. He is not making any effort towards truth [sathya] and righteousness [dharma]. Man has made this sacred life into a very hard stone. Human being himself is not able to understand the very definition of human life. The human life actually meant the harmony between thought, word and deed. What is the value if there is disharmony, disunity between thought, word and deed?
Man passes through divine experience in every stage. But, he is not making attempt to know that it is divine experience. The first - childhood. In his childhood he spends all the time in fun and frolic, in play and game and singing. Gradually he grows into the age, middle age. At the age of youth, without knowing whatsoever, losing the discrimination between good and bad, he makes an effort to conduct himself as per whims and fancies. With all desires, he gets his life interwoven with the desires.
What are these desires? Are they in tune with his human life? He doesn’t put himself the question: Am I a human being or am I an animal? Along education begins the ego [ahamkara] and other perversions. Before he is educated the attachment and possessive instinct occupies from head to toe. In the - in the education system he loses that discriminating knowledge. He considers selfishness and self interest as the objectives of life. He wants all those he sees. All that he thinks, he wants to experience.
To desire all that you see is the quality of animal - not that of human being. If he wants to experience all that he thinks - is a demonic quality, not a human nature. Whatever that has been thought over, whatever that has been aspired for, he should use his sense of discrimination. He is not able to understand that all the desires at the stage of youth will put him to danger. He feels that the senses will give him the happiness and the pleasure. They don't confer that all, at all. They are just emissaries of God of Death.
Senses will make him go along that foolish path. Senses will make him proceed in a way as to ruin his human quality. So, in the stage of youth we should have control over senses. The senses gradually will ruin the human nature. Who is a human being? Only taking into a path, not out of haste, not out of anxiety or worry, he treads deciding that path only after coolness, inquiry. But till today he has no sense of time. The water bubble on the lotus leaf shines like a pearl. (Swami: Water drop) Water drop on the lotus leaf shines like a pearl. How long does the beauty last? The moment wind blows the shining pearl like water drop, falls.
Similarly, a youth today he shines like a water drop on the leaf in this o.. - lake of life. He is not able to inquire where from the water drop come. The water drop came out of the water beneath. Born in water, it gets subsided in water. It grows in water. It is the water bubble that subsides in water. Human being is bubble, water bubble. God [Narayana] is water. He has to merge in the very same water. This truth man is not able to inquire.
So, the entire human existence, he enjoys like animals, ends like a demon. Human being - having taken the human birth he should become divine. He should not return back. This truth has to be realized by every individual. The stages of man change from step to step. Money may come and go. Different forms of ig…, knowledge may come and go. But - but the life span, when the end comes one has to leave. Anything we can earn. Out of the time spent, even a moment you cannot get it back.
Therefore, man should conduct himself as to not waste time and to make his time sacred. Having been born a human being he leads the life of an animal. Even animal has season and reason in limits. Man today, the educated, in positions, with all the science and the good knowledge, with all the name and fame, as he proceeds along the selfish lines, he becomes worse than animal. Why education? Why money? Why intellect? Why intelligence? All of them are only to deceive people. He thinks that he is deceiving people. No! He is deceiving himself.
So, man today is not making an attempt to make use of his capacities and potentialities in the right direction. The youth works in a wayward - wayward way without any ???. The youth stage has come in between. It does not come with us, it does not go with us. The stage of youth is a passing cloud. This truth is not recognized by any intellectual.
Name is high. The whole village is just a pit. The name may be high, that individual may have all mean feelings. Such a man is no man. He is the one who deceives himself, a narrow minded one. So, this youth - so, we should put this stage of youth along the proper track. Our position, authority also should be put along the right track. The reputation also would have to be the right track. Then only there will be brilliance to this human life.
The third stage - old age. In this old age he thinks of so many experiences, (Swami: Not experiences, past) past incidents. So, he go on - he goes on recalling his past, what all he experienced, what all he did. The moment old age starts either the wife or the son will never respect you. What is the reason? When there is proper conduct at the stage of youth - while you are old you will be respected. When your behavior is not proper, in old age anyone will not respect you.
Ultimately, brooding over the past, without fulfilling all that he wanted, he would not be able to enjoy the money he has earned. All the money that he had earned by unrighteous means, unjustifiable means, he has to part all that money to his bad relatives, bad children like that. He has to understand, so long he is alive in the body, in our lifetime we should go along the right directions.
For our life the chief thing is eye. The eye, nethra, in sastra or sacred text every human being, every man to ninety (per) percent, puts into action, all that he sees with the eye, either the one he reads, or the scene he watches, or listens, ideas, or the seen, all these things are watched by his physical eye. Without the eye he cannot understand even a very subtle object, experience. He cannot see the smallest of objects. This eye which is not even an inch will be able to watch the planets far off, lakhs of miles.
But, he is not blossoming the inner eye. He thinks of space travel lakhs and lakhs of miles. Has he gone in even an inch? You know why eyes are given? You know why eyes are given? Is to watch everything? No! No! It is only to see God in full form with the eyes. You know why hands are given? Not to do what all you like. The hands are given to worship God. This Prahlada said,
If you don't worship the Lord with your hands, If you don't sing the glory of the Lord with all the mouth, If he does not think of compassion and truth in your heart, Why should they be born to their mother? It is all in vain.
Why should one be born? Is it to give suffering to mother at the time of delivery? The foxes and dogs also are born. But they also help their parents, father and mother. The modern, educated man is not helping the parents. Is that education? No! This is no-education! What is meant by education? In education is the divine feeling should be projected in elevation. That is the true education in human life.
With all the degrees, B.A. and M.A., the reputed great people, they may be men of affluence and prosperity, maybe men of charity. With a longevity and the strength, they be men of strength. Doing penance, going through the veda, they may be viprahs or brahmins. They stand nowhere before devotees. (Swami: Bhakthi! Bhakthi! Bhakthi!) Devotion! Devotion! What is this devotion? In the name of devotion does it amount to deceiving the world? You will be betraying God.
Devotion meant, 'Following God's command'. Under any circumstances you should not harm anyone. (Swami: Help ever! Hurt never!) That is the essence in the eighteen epics: 'Help ever! Hurt never!'. But unfortunately some, from birth to death they go on harming, hurting. All selfishness, selfishness.
We are born in this world. We grow in the society. How are we helping the society? We don't have that social awareness. (Swami: I and my) I and my. I and mine. Is that the aim of life? No! We should travel from 'I' to 'we'. From 'we' we should go to that sense of 'our' and merge there. That vast, broad feeling is not seen in a trace (c: anywhere), in a ???.
By what kind of education have you developed? By what education are you in good position? By what posi…, by what education have you a ???. Only such ideas are there. Out of me, how is the society going to be helped? What kind of good that I can do? Education I, I acquire. How the society is going to be helped? There are no human beings at all. By good luck they study. That is no education.
The sheep, goat, monkey - given the training can ride the cycle also in a circus. That is also education. So, it is no true education simply by the learning. It is all bookish knowledge. This bookish knowledge proceeds as superficial knowledge. One should reach practical knowledge. How many are you listening to? How many teachings you are listening? How many are you practicing? Nothing whatsoever!
Years roll on. You are aging. Old age is approaching. No intellect, discrimination, no practice whatsoever. It is not the divinity in human life. Practice one or two! With all education ??? being intellect, a foolish one will not know his own self. In spite of all education in any way he may be, a mean man will never change his quality. Actually his education will ??? him to argument , not to acquire full knowledge.
Why - why should we study, study, and study, and die? We should study to reach that deathless state. Better one dies without education. Why should they die with education? In this field of education everyone should recognize clearly - with us, how the education, how the country is, what service we are rendering. In the country all are educated. Why is country so low now? We should inquire at once. We are drowned in selfishness. We have become like a frog in a well. Educated man should be like a frog in an ocean. Wherever he goes he has got only two considerations, 'I' and 'mine', 'I' and 'mine', nothing whatsoever. These are not the qualities of devotion. These are bad qualities.
Swami sees many. They are not true devotees. They are, they are there. When we spend all the world, all the life in the physical, worldly matters, when do you reach divinity? You spend all the time for this. Then when do you practice? When do you experience? The life is spent, the life is spent in studying. When do you put it in practice? It is only practice that gives you bliss, not learning. You should practice in such a way, that the society will be joyful, the individuals will be happy. This is the essence of the text Vivekacudamani .
An old man, very close to river Ganges sat under a tree starting repeating, memorizing, "Dukrin Karane, Dukrin Karane." It is a grammar principle. Sankara along with his disciples was going to Ganges for bath. He heard the sound. There to that place he went. He said,
"Oh scholar! What is it, that you are memorizing?"
"I am memorizing the grammar written by Pani, a scholar."
"What is the result out of this education?"
"I will be, I will become a scholar in grammar."
"What is the profit when you become a scholar in grammar?"
"Being a scholar in the grammar I can be in the court of a king, make, please king and get earnings."
