(Swami: Sravanam, kirthanam, vishnosmaranam, padasevanam, vandanam, archanam,

, sneham, atmanivedanam)

Devotion is nine fold. Though paths are many goal is one. Similarly, there are countless human beings, but the nature of atma, the self, is same. In fathomless depth of ocean there are countless waves. No two waves are alike. Waves assume different forms. However, in all the waves the water of the ocean is present. In this infinite, vast Universe there are countless beings.

Though the names and the forms of the individuals are different, single divinity with all the three qualities: the existence, the awareness, and the bliss [sat, chit, ananda] are uniform. But man is not recognizing that broad feeling there. He considers himself separate and he calls himself an individual. Man today is living for selfishness and self-interest. (Swami: Swa plus artha, swartham) This word swartha, selfishness, has two things: swa and artha. Swa meaning: one's own self. Artha meant: following that. Living for one's own sake, for one's own use. Selfishness meant: man is living with self-interest. In this life which is like a water bubble, at what moment this water bubble would burst nobody can know.

With the assumption that he would be permanent, though being himself a water bubble, he leads the life. So, Upanishads declared, "Arise! Awake! Stop not till goal is reached. Oh man, get up from the slumber of the sleep of ignorance. Awake and visualize the sunrise of prajnana, the knowledge. Keep up your human qualities." That is taught by upanishads.

Man today, however great he is in philosophy, in spite of all his spiritual practices, in spite of all his scholarship, though he investigates and inquires, but he is not able to make his own observations. Because he couldn't understand himself, man is facing so many troubles. He is not simply a man. Body is that of a human. The nature within this body is true atma, self. So, in relation to the body he is just a human, but when he takes him to the level of the self, he is very the atma. Body is the temple and the individual is quite ancient. (Swami: Body is the temple of God) Body is the temple of God. We have to take it as a temple. When do you get that temple feeling? Where there is God, it can be a temple. It cannot be a temple without God.

So, in this body - therefore, this body which is the temple, there is the Lord, who is ancient [sanathana]. So, man has to develop good thoughts [sankalpa]. Thoughts only make it his life. Out of these thoughts only commence desires. Only desire chain him, bind him. The first that comes out of the thoughts is iccha sakthi, or desire. This iccha sakthi is very important, equal to that of life. (Swami: Medha sakthi

, grahaya sakthi

, nirnaya sakthi

, vaak sakthi

. Learning, the memory, the recapitulation all other powers such as (Swami: Vaak power) vaak [speech] power come out of this only. (Swami: Decision) And decision. All come out of this only - ichcha sakthi, the will.

This will is the king for all other faculties. If he makes his will in the proper use, he can lead a sacred life. When he makes use of his will along the wrong path he becomes wicked. Man should be good, but never be bad. What is the reason for this? Through this will his thoughts change. For that reason the willpower declines, becomes weak. It becomes weak. As the willpower becomes weak, his desires become excessive. The reason: the willpower is not very powerful. Desires are more and more. When desires are more the willpower would be less and less. A small example.

Man has so many bad habits - that, he would like to have coffee, tea, smoke and so on. (Swami: Cigarettes) Smoke cigarettes and so on. All of them will certainly reduce the power of the will. Man may have twenty habits, if you reduce one habit after another the willpower will increase. If you leave coffee or tea your memory will increase. Either students today or authorities, businessmen, as they have desires more and more they lose even memory power. If you develop willpower you will have the power of the wisdom [jnana sakthi] also. Basing on this (Swami: Less luggage - more comfort) it is said, "Less luggage and more comfort." Desires are the luggage. The more you reduce, you will have the power of the action more, you will have power of the will more, you will have power of the wisdom much more.

So, man sits in meditation today. For a moment mind doesn't stay there. The reason? Willpower has become weak. Wherefrom you get willpower? (Swami: Free will) Many say 'free will'. Man has no free will. Only God has this free will none else. All his power is for others. What is the reason? He is bound by his desires. No one has freedom. We say freedom, freedom, that is free will. He thinks that he can act as he wants. No! A small example.

There is a main road. There is a young man with a big stick. In that broad street with his stick he wanted to exercise. If he really wants to have physical exercise he can do at his home on the terrace. He has every right there. But in public street if he exercise, immediately police will arrest him, take him. The reason? Because his freedom interferes with the freedom of the other one. What do you mean by freedom? The true freedom lies in not interfering with the freedom of others. As you have freedom to exercise freely on the street, the person in front has got equal freedom to escape from you stick and lead his own life. So, so, you should have that freedom, which doesn't interfere with the freedom of others.

But no one is bothering today about the freedom of others. He thinks of his own self. He thinks of his selfishness. He aspires his self-interest. Therefore, there is no freedom in man. What do you mean by freedom [swecha]? (Swami: Swa, iccha is swecha) This swecha, freedom, has two words here: swa plus ichcha. Swa meant atma. The desire, the decision of atma is swecha. It is not the desire of the mind. Not the desire of the intellect. It is not the desire of the thought. It is the desire of atma.

What is there in the mind? (Swami: Mind is like a mad monkey) Mind is like a mad monkey. There is no mind as such. But we create that mind ourselves.

What is this? It is cloth. It is no cloth. (Swami: Bundle of threads) It is bundle of threads. (Swami: There are not threads) There are not threads. (Swami: It is cotton) It is cotton. (Swami: First, cotton) First cotton. (Swami: Second, thread) Second, thread. (Swami: Third, cloth) Third cloth. So, this cloth has got in it the thread and the cotton. So, how is the mind? First thoughts. Second desires. (Swami: Bundle of desires is the mind) Bundle of desires constitute the mind.

If you want to make this cloth disappear, what you should do? Separate out the threads, then there will be no cloth. If you remove the desires one after the other, there will be no mind. This in vedanta is called amanaska, absence of mind. We are creating the mind ourselves. We create the mind out of desires.

The mind which is our own creation is harming us. How? Man, for his protection, he will have so many protective things. That on which he relies, will punish him. The thoughts out of us, when they are good thoughts, they will protect us. The development of good thoughts is called dharma. When we protect dharma, you will be protected in turn. (Swami: Dharmo rakshati rakshitahah) If you protect dharma you will protected. If you punish dharma you will be punished in turn. So, so for our difficulties, the troubles and miseries mind is responsible. So, we should keep our mind properly. We should not give scope for all thoughts. The reason

is, the moment thought arises, (Swami: Discrimination, is it good or bad? Is it right or wrong?) You should discriminate: is it right or wrong, is it good or bad? When you discriminate like that the speed of the thoughts would be lessened.

The moment you act as per the direction of the thought the speed will increase. To control the thought process: take time. Inquire [vicharana]. Inquire before hand. (Swami: Start early, drive slowly, reach safely) So, Swami says, "Start early, drive slowly, reach safely." If you slow down your thoughts, you can reach safely. But man today, he is in a hurry. He drives in a hurry. As he is hurrying he has to face the danger.

One should not hasten. (Swami: Santhi, santhi, santhi) For everything, for everything you need peace. You should inquire. You are angry. Immediately you have anger, you should not give action, put action to your tongue. When you are angry you speak as you like. At one time, you act with your hand also, this is dangerous. The anger is based on a temporary feeling. When you understand the truth later you will feel a loss. I am mistaken. Then what is the use? Prior to that - you inquire! Where does the mistake lie? His or someone else? Without inquiry, if you act as per the whims of your mind you are bound to commit mistakes. These are things that require rectification in our daily life.

In this physical life, in this physical life when we control our thoughts and ideas, it will confer peace in spiritual path also. In the secular world and in spirituality one mind acts. Mind is one. Paths are different. First control your mind. When you control the mind you can understand the divinity. Without understanding the divinity, if you have all imagination and plans, it will give you negative results. So, never give scope for imagination. Make effort to know the truth.

Whatever may be said to you, let it be imprinted in your heart, satisfy your conscience. That is true spiritual practice. What do you mean by spiritual practice? Through practice you can accomplish anything. What do mean by this practice? Is it japa? Or meditation [dhyana]? Or bhajan? All amounts to sadhana

. What is important practice? If you desire to have true practice, keep away all the feelings different from atma. Get away from that, all that interferes with the path of atma. What is that non-atmic feeling? Body, mind, intellect, chittha - they are all non-atmic feelings. Atma is one. It is present in every one, but for this we should develop good thoughts.

Man will face depression (Swami: Depression) at times and confusion (Swami: Confusion). While in spiritual practice when there are negative results, he faces depression. Out of depression he will have anger towards God also. You should love God. You should never be angry with God. Anger is a weakness. This very anger will make you get away from the positive results in store for you.

Aspirants should have love. (Swami: Anger, ego, jealousy, hatred) Anger, ego, jealousy are not atmic feelings. The atmic quality is love. Truth is one. (Swami: Truth is God, love is God) Truth is God, love is God. This is subtler than - (Swami: Truth is more fundamental then atom) Truth is more fundamental than atom. (Swami: Love is more fundamental than atom) Love is more fundamental than atom. You can visualize an atom with the help of lenses. You cannot see love. Love has no form. Love has only name. That love should come out of our heart. Your failures should never entertain anger. Under any circumstances: you love God, you love God.

You may have certain mistakes. You may face failure also. You may face troubles. (Swami: It is good for me, it is good for me, good for me) Then with love you feel, that "It is all good for me." (Swami: Whatever He tells, whatever He do, "It is good for me, good for me") When you develop that spirit of equanimity, you will be at pace. (Swami: Santhi, santhi, santhihi) In prayer we repeat this word peace [santhi] thrice. Why should we say it three times? Why not once? Why not twice ? Or four times? Why should we say it three times? We should be at peace along the physical plane. On the mental plane we should be peaceful. At the level of the soul we should be peaceful. We should have peace at all these three levels. There is mental peace. There is peace in the heart [hridaya], but when there is no, no peace at the physical level it becomes restless. Physical peace is there, mental peace is there, but there is no peace in the soul. All the three are essential. (Swami: The one you think you are - that is physical body) The one you think you are is the physical body. (Swami: The one others think you are - is mental body) The one others think you are is mental body. (Swami: The one you really are - that is atma) The one you really are - that is atma.

You need peace in all these three. (Swami: Adi bhautika, adi adyatmika, adi daivika) In vedanta these are three levels. Bible also advocates these three paths. (Swami: Jesus, "I am the Messenger of God") Jesus said in the first instance, "I am the messenger of God." (Swami: "My master is separate. I am only messenger") "My master is separate. I am only messenger." Then there is no connection between the master and the messenger. He only brings the message. He practiced. (Swami: Realized the self) Realized. (Swami: "I am not the messenger of God") In the second stage he said, " I am not the messenger of God." (Swami: "I am the son of God") "I am the son of God." What, what does it mean? It only means relationship is established between son and father. There is relationship between father and son. He practiced further. He realized (Swami: "I and my father are one") - on further realization he said, "I and my father are one."

When there is the feeling of oneness, it is holy ghost. Same in the Persian language, in Islam. (Swami: "I am in the light") The first step is: I am in the light. (Swami: No freedom. "I am in the light") There is no freedom. "I am in the light." (Swami: "I am the messenger of God equal") This is equal to: "I am the messenger of God." He practiced for some (c: more) time. (Swami: "The light is in me") Then he said, "The light is in me." Then he has authority. He practiced further. (Swami: "I am the light") He declared, "I am the light." (Swami: First, "I am in the light") First step, "I am in the light." (Swami: Second, "The light is in me") Second step, "Light is in me." (Swami: Third, "I am the light") The third stage, "I am the light." (Swami: Adwaitha, visishtaadwaitha, dwaitha). In Bharath culture these are three steps: duality, qualified non-duality, and non-duality.

All these three paths are similar in all religions. All religions together teach good things only. Man has to conduct himself with all the intelligence. If minds are good, which religion is bad? Bharathiyas should listen to this! Our minds are bad. No religion is bad. There is difference in mind but not in religion. (Swami: The caste of humanity) The caste of humanity. (Swami: The religion of love) The religion of love. (Swami: Language of the heart) Language of the heart. When we take these three nothing is much more than the unity and accommodating ???.

(Swami: Sahana vavatu sahanau bhunaktu saha veeryam karavaa vahai) Sahanam: togetherness. How we should be. Let us grow together. Let us move together. Let us know, develop that intelligence together. Let us move together without any conflict. Let us live in friendship. Let us grow together. Let us move about together. Let us develop the intelligence which we have come to know. This is the true meaning of equality. (Swami: Santhi, santhi, santhi) With this equality only the peace is secured.

Without equality - enmity, or difference, or duality, if it is there, (Swami: Santhi, santhi, santhi) - you should say softly, " Peace, peace." Thrice. When there is enmity, there will be difference in that peace also. (Swami: Santhi, santhi, santhi) If you say harshly, "Peace" there will be difference in peace also.

When there is enmity within you, you say it out openly. So, words are not important. Heart [hridaya] is important. So, we should do spiritual practice with purity of heart [chittha suddhi]. Broad heart. The path of love is noblest.

It may not be possible for you to do meditation. Body may not be under control for meditation. You may not have steady mind in meditation. You may not know paths of yoga. (Swami: Easy path, short, short cut) Easy path, short cut. This is there only in love.

So, what we have to develop is love. When we develop love, we can merge in God who is embodiment of love. We may have so many qualities and habits, when once you merge in God both become one.

There are so many rivers with different names and taste (Swami: And form), and form. When once they merge in ocean - (Swami: Ocean name, ocean form, ocean taste) - they will have name, form, and taste of that of ocean. So long you live as a human it may be different. When once you merge in God with love, you will have only one form. (Swami: You are also God) You are also God. You are not separate. (Swami: You are not separate from God) You are not separate form God. (Swami: You and God are one) You and God are one. We should come to that level.

Many give different teachings about this path. That is all bookish knowledge. That is not important. We should develop practical knowledge. It is easy one. It is divine. It is noble. It is royal path [raja marga]. Don't take to unnecessary directions, paths, in the field of meditation. Many teachers teach many paths. All of them are artificial. (Swami: Art is outside, heart is inside) Art is outside, heart is inside. Follow your heart, never follow art. When your conscience is satisfied, do the spiritual practice with love.

There is nothing in this world more than Love. In every man, any type of quality. We may accomplish anything. We can see that no quality with us. We can be free from anger [krodha], hatred [dwesha] we can get away, the desire we can get away, but you can not reach that state of loveless ness. (Swami: Love is life) Love is life. (Swami: Live in Love) Live in Love.

That love is in everyone. You are making it, use of it in different directions. We should unify our love. Make if one, that will give you bliss. Wherefrom you get bliss? (Swami: Happiness is union with God) Happiness lies in union with God. By joining you get bliss. With whom should you join? Not joining with equals. Not joining with classmates. Not with friends. (Swami: Real friend is only God) The real friend is only God. But friends today, so long there is money in the pocket, the position of the father, so long they are there, people come to you, "Hallo, hallo." When pocket is empty, your father retired nobody will say, "Goodbye." (Swami: God is not like that) God is not like that. (Swami: God is in you, with you, around you, above you, below you) God is always with you, in you, above you, below you. (Swami: He is the real friend) He is the real friend.

Even in difficulties He will rescue you. Relatives will follow you up to the burial ground. It is only God's name and God who is always with you. He will never forsake you. You should have friendship with such a friend. Then only human life will succeed. When you have such a friend, you will never fall short of anything. No scope for troubles. Difficulties will never be near you. (Swami: Bliss, bliss, bliss) You will always be blissful. (Swami: Nithya anandam) This is Eternal bliss. (Swami: Parama sukhadam) Supreme happiness. (Swami: Kevalam jnamam) It's very form of wisdom. It is non-dual. Equal to a the sky. The aim is the supreme truth. One. Pure. Motionless. It is the eternal witness. Beyond expression. It has no three attributes. This you get out of bliss.

When you have that bliss in Universe you have accomplished everything. If you have the army, you can be king for one kingdom. If you conquer your senses, you will be king of kings. You will be king for the Universe.

First control your senses. Offer all your senses onto the Lord. Offer all your actions to please God. "Not I. You have gifted me. I return back which You have given me." You sit in Ganges. Collect Ganges water. The water of the Ganges is again offered back to Ganges. It is not you grandfather's property. It is not your property. What is your property? (Swami: Hridaya) Your heart is your property. You offer your true property. Don't offer someone else's. (Swami: It is cheating) It is cheating. You offer your own. You have got right on your heart. That you offer to God! Offer with love, then you will fulfill everything. As paths are many, don't make your life, the time, and other responsibilities unsacred. (Swami: Time is God) Time is God. (Swami: Don't waste time) Don't waste time. (Swami: Time waste is life waste) Time waste is life waste. Lead your life with love.
