***************************************************

Life is highly valuable in the sense it is full of radiance and full of virtue. Such a noble human life - we are wasting, our life, selling it out for (Swami: Slow) for sensual pleasure like gold. Human life is highly sacred. It has got all friendship and the character. The main responsibility of human being is to realize the human value.

When man is born, without any desire, without any quality. At the time of birth he has no attributes whatsoever. As he grows up, as he changes his food habits, because of the effects of the company, his qualities they also change. Because of attachment and possessive instinct, he spends his life like that. If a human is to lead a human life, if he is to develop the human quality, he has to face so many losses, difficulties, and troubles. He has to face so many challenges. But man, but if man resists, faces the challenge, faces all kinds of defeats and losses, then only he will uphold the human value. In human life we are bound to face so many problems. They all help indirectly the human life.

In the first instance man develops desires. Right from boy till age old one, right from women to men, right from innocent to a saint, the desires are common. However, desires are very important. They have to be desired. One aspires to reach exalted position. One aspires to lead a noble life. One desires to be a good student. One desires to tread along the divine path. It is quite natural for man to have such desires, but there should be limits for these desires. As he crosses all these limits, man loses peace and faces all restlessness [asanthi]. Because of desires only, man becomes restless. Desires may be there, but even desires should have a limit.

Because of the effects of kali, the desires in man, they are growing like anthills. There are no limits to these desires. So, man is bound by desires. Not only he is chained, he imprisons the whole life. Therefore, the desires not sought after by animals, they are growing rampant among humans. Even the desires of animals are limited. The animals have reason and season, but the desires of mankind has no season or reason. So, man today, he faces so many troubles and problems.

There is no dearth of food, raiment, and shelter. But throughout he - the, the, the restlessness follows him like a shadow. What is the reason for restlessness? It is only excessive desires, that makes him restless. Therefore, he must put a ceiling to his desires. (Swami: Less luggage - more comfort) Less luggage leads to more comfort. (Swami: Life is a long journey) Life is a long journey. In this long journey you should not have the excess of luggage. This in vedantic parlance is called renunciation [vairagya].

However, for long we have been reading, listening to, and practicing this renunciation. But how far are we able to accomplish? If we put a question to ourselves, man has not put a single step forward, in the least! He is remaining as he is. In spite of listening to many discourses, in spite of reading vedantic texts, in spite of so many devices, in spite of japa and meditation, in spite of knowledge of sacred texts, but his natural position lies where he, he is. When does he progress? When he actually practices them, then only he will reach noble heights. But today practice is a zero. In education he is a hero.

So many things we tell. We recite so many poems. But, if he inquires his own position, he is remaining where he has been. Then what is the value that he attaches to science, the good knowledge, and the divine knowledge? Instead of telling hundred, it is very important to do, practice at least one. So, we should start practicing. Only in practice we, we get experience.

When so many delicious items are served on the plate, by simply knowing the menu your hunger is not appeased. You have to make an effort to eat. A beggar will never improve his condition simply on listening to the greatness of economy. A very hungry person on listening to the entire menu card he will never get his hunger appeased. No! The pitch darkness would never get dispelled by listening to the light effects. Similarly, man by simply listening to spirituality, can never be a philosopher. By simply understanding the standard of vedic sacred texts he can never be a philosopher.

All this is merely bookish knowledge. This bookish knowledge merely is superficial knowledge. But supreme knowledge is needed. This supreme knowledge is obtained out of practical knowledge. So, every man to some extent make an effort to practice. The one who doesn't practice in spite of thousand words he has, he can never be a philosopher. He never deserves God's grace to a fraction in the least. What is it that we sacrifice? What is it that we follow? But both are not happening. We, we don't practice. We are not sacrificing.

Then why should we listen? As we listen to other stories, we listen to this. In daily life we watch video, radio, TV. What is the result by watching this? You can only recognize so long you watch. Later you forget. But spirituality is not like that. That which is heard, that is watched must be treasured in the heart. Then only you will have satisfaction and the strength. Man considers himself great. He thinks that others are less knowledgeable. For this a small example.

At one time Krishna, he called Duryodhana and Dharmaja. He said, "Dharmaja." He called Dharmaja and said, "Dharmaja, you go! Find out if there is any bad person in our kingdom. Bring him over here." Dharmaja started going. Later He called Duryodhana. Calling him He said, "Duryodhana, you go and search for any good person in our kingdom." Duryodhana went. He went round. He returned. He said, "Krishna, in our kingdom there are no good people at all. If there is goodness, a fraction or little or more, it is in me only."

Later Dharmaja went round and returned. Then He asked Dharmaja, "Dharmaja, is there any bad person in our kingdom?" He said, "Swami, our kingdom is full of good people." He said, "One or two bad qualities?" "If there are any bad qualities, one or two, there are in me only, nowhere else." Then Krishna said, " (Swami: Yad bhavam - tad bhavathi) Because your mind is good, you find everyone good."

The mind of Duryodhana is wicked. As he is bad he considers everyone bad. You will find the same color depending upon the color of the glasses you put on. The one who is highly egoistic thinks, that he knows everything - more than others. It is only the effect of his own ego [ahamkara]. The one who knows everything, he really considers, that he doesn't know anything. He knows everything, but he doesn't practice them. So, he considers, there are none as innocent as me. Therefore, in human life, it is only mental nature that is important. The one who claims, that he knows everything actually doesn't know anything. The one who says, that he doesn't know anything, knows everything. So, we have to know everything. But at least out of those things many known, we should practice one or two.

Then namasmarana, chanting the name of the Lord. On listening to the name of the Lord, as narrated by Singh in his talk, on listening to the very name the bird had next birth as a calf, and the calf as a prince. But he always chants Lord's Name 'Sai Ram, Sai Ram'. But to what extent there is transformation in him? If he inquires himself, not even a fraction of a change in him. What is the use? A bird could change. An animal could change. The prince also could have the merger in the Divinity.

So, so it is not enough if you repeat. The tape recorder also chants the name of the Lord. Gramophone plate also repeats Lord's name. To what extent they enjoy results? So, we should not chant the name of the Lord like inert body. We should do it with full awareness [chaithanya]. Everything should come out of the heart [hridayam] (Swami: Not the lips) It is not out of the lips. We say everything out of lips, but we are not experiencing at the level of the heart. In order that the human life be transformed into the divine, imprinting the divinity in our heart, we should sacrifice the human, the human life.

What do you mean by spirituality? Spirituality meant: not japa, not meditation, not bhajan, not only this. They are only good actions. But he has to sacrifice all the animal quality, which is deep rooted in his heart, accrued over past births. On one side repeating Lord's name, while banging everybody, is not effect of chanting the Lord's name.

When you chant His name, the feelings, sacred feelings also should develop in you. The tree is growing up. As it grows up, the roots also should go in. The responsibility of the tree, that is growing up, is borne by the roots below. So, as the external is growing, the feeling also should go deep. Then only the tree will have security, the strength, and everything. If the roots don't go deep, the whole tree that grows up will fall. We are growing up. We claim ourselves as philosophers, but there is no security for the roots of the feeling.

God, He is after the feeling. He never loves your externals. The external and feeling together, it gets transformed into divine radiance. You should change externally. You should change within, because God is present within, outside, and all over. Therefore veda says that, "God is installed outside, inside, around, everywhere."

We are growing in spiritual path. To what extent could we control attachment? The attachment is ever on the rise. As attachment increases, the detachment to the Lord also increases proportionately. When you develop attachment towards God, attachment to the world decreases (Swami: It is a see-saw). It is a see-saw. You are at the center. (Swami: This is world) On one side is world (Swami: God). The other side is God. If you travel towards God, world will be down. It you travel towards the world, God will be down.

In which direction we should travel? You have worldly attachment, you have got desire for God. But both you cannot have at the same time. (Swami: Heart is only single sofa) The heart is a single sofa. (Swami: Not double sofa) It is not double sofa. (Swami: Not musical chair) It is not musical chair. It should not change continuously. You should install only one nature. Basing on this (Swami: Na karmana) No action. (Swami: Na prajaya) No society. (Swami: Dhanena) No money. [No attachment to either the action you perform or the society or the wealth you possess]. (Swami: Tyagenaike amritatvamanasuh) It is only through sacrifice, you get eternity, immortality.

Here in this container there is water. If you want to pour, put milk there, you have to empty the water out of that vessel. Then only you can pour milk there. If you pour milk, when there is water, neither water nor milk stay there. Similarly, in our heart so many worldly desires are there. First empty it, then fill it up with the divine desires. If the brain is really empty you can stuff it with anything. If the brain is filled with other things it, it, it can never be empty. If it is not empty it can you ever fill it up with the divine knowledge?

First cleanse, purify that. That is purity [chittha suddhi). Without purity, unity is not possible. Where there is no unity, divinity will never enter. When there is no unity, enmity commences. First we should develop purity. What do you mean by purity? It is not selfish purity. God is in everyone. So, we should respect all. That nature we should develop. Whomsoever you salute it goes to God. Similarly, whomsoever you disrespect it amounts to disrespecting the Lord. So, whomsoever you meet, as God installs there, so you respect. Swami? Never criticize anybody. You citizen your own self.

I should rectify the mistakes within me, but never point out others' mistakes. This Jesus also said. "When there is a beam in the eye, he doesn't notice, but he looks at the mosquito in other's eyes." It is not good. He should get away from the defects within him. You just consider good in others, never look to faults of others, that is real spiritual practice. Mistakes in him - when he thinks of his own defects and others merits - man will reach noble heights. Covering his own mistakes, extolling, speaking of others demerits, the humanity is completely subdued.

So, first he should inquire within himself. (Swami: Self inquiry) It is self inquiry. When he inquires (Swami: Self-realization), then he will have self-realization. Wherefrom he got self-realization? The self-realization came out of self. Everything is self. (Swami: Self-confidence) Self-confidence. (Swami: Self-satisfaction) Self-satisfaction. (Swami: Self-sacrifice) Self-sacrifice. (Swami: Self-realization) Self-realization. (Swami: Everything is the self). Everything is within the self. Then who is self? That is the true self, atma.

He has to investigate his own true self. He has to visualize his own true self. (Swami: Nenu, nenu, nenu) He says 'I' and 'I'. Who am 'I'? Where is that I? Is it in the body? Or in the mind? Or intellect? Or in the chittha? Or in the inner instruments? No! This I is present all over. (Swami: Constant integrated awareness is I) Therefore, Swami defines I as: constant integrated awareness." It is in the mind. It is the body. It is in the intellect. It is all over. That is God.

So, God's nature is that, which is all-pervasive. So, we should develop the feeling that God is everywhere. To have that broad feeling, we should get away from the animal quality. When we get away from the animal quality, then only divine feelings will come out. Along with namasmarana [repetition of God's name], along with practice, we should also develop broad mindedness.

Many come from far off places, spending high amounts. Spending so much, coming from far off places, what is it that we have got? We should develop divinity within. It is in him. Morning also, this morning Swami said, "In this cup there is water. If you put teaspoon of sugar, sugar is at the bottom. Above there is water. Taste lies at the bottom, not on the top. If you drink the top-water it is tasteless. What is that tasteless water? (Swami: Worldly desires) The tasteless water is worldly desires. But the divine desire is at the bottom. The divine desire at the bottom, in order to get it mixed up with the water on the top, what should we do? Put the teaspoon there, then stir it up well. Then sugar at the bottom will spread all over the water. Then wherever you drink it is bound to be sweet."

Our heart is cup. Divinity is sugar. Worldly desires is water. When you put the intellect [buddhi], the spoon, and you stir it, which is sadhana, then the divinity will spread all over. So, what is it, that we are supposed to do? The divinity within us is quite natural. We are not expanding it all over. (Swami: Nenu, nenu, nenu) We are limiting it, we are making it narrow with the feelings of 'I' and 'mine'. Mine and I. This is only contraction of love. But it should be expansion of love. In order to expand the love, you should have the feeling: everyone belongs to you, because there is God in everyone.

So, the true spiritual practice is to travel from the position of 'I' to the position of 'we'. You should travel from small zero to big zero. A small zero. This is zero. There is another bigger zero. It is also zero. Still bigger is another big zero. It is also zero. All are zeros. It is only there is difference in quantity, but quality is same. So, we - to think it is a mistake, to consider that we are mowing from smaller (Swami: Truth) truth to bigger truth. Truth is truth. Truth is same at all times. So, the divinity is humanity, we should expand it.

When you expand it, it is also full. Even this is full. We should recognize the fullness in both. So, we should expand our feelings, (Swami: Our mind) our mind. When you have broad mind, we will be able to recognize the divinity in everyone. Without broad feelings, with all narrow feelings, in spite of listening to talks it is, it is all in vain.

To commit suicide a small pin is enough. To kill others you need pistol and a gun. To realize one's own self one word is enough. To tell others you should read many texts. That which is said by reading the texts, has no taste, the true standard for divinity.

He keeps Moon on the top of His head, Shiva. The light of the Moon is given to everybody, but He kept all the poison in His throat. He kept all the bad in Him, but He distributed all the good. That is the equanimity [samatva] in the nature of Iswara, or Shiva. (Swami: Iswara sarva bhutanam). That Iswara is in everyone. You be like Iswara, distribute good to ten people. You keep all the bad within you. Don't distribute your bad quality. You have to subdue all the bad qualities within you, but never pass on to anybody. But distribute good, do good to everybody. This is the only proofs given there.

We have no time to go through the eighteen puranas and epics. But we have to realize the essence of eighteen ethics. What is that essence? (Swami: Help ever - hurt never) The essence as Swami puts it is this, "Help ever - hurt never." These two are enough for us. We should help everybody, we should never hurt anyone. If we, if we know these two, we can know anything else, because God is in everyone. This truth we have to recognize.

Boys, in this young age, you should develop broad feelings. Instead of telling many things to others, it is enough if you practice at least one. Effects of the language, the effect of texts could never transform anybody at any time. One may repeat many slokas, stanzas, but your grief is never solved, taken out. But put it into practice the essence of one canto you read. That is enough.

There is potato and chapatti served on the plate. (Swami: A hundred times: potato, chapatti, potato, chapatti, potato, chapatti, potato, chapatti) Even if you repeat 'potato chapatti, potato chapatti' hundred times, your hunger will never be satisfied. You eat the potato chapatti, then your hunger will be appeased. First experience, practice. It is no use my merely chanting Lord's name. (Swami: Sai Ram, Sai Ram, Sai Ram, Sai Ram - Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram - Krishna, Krishna, Krishna) So, like a tape recorder, if we say 'Ram, Ram, Ram, Sai Ram, Sai Ram, Krishna ...' it is of no use. It is not enough if it comes out of the lips. It comes out of the heart. When it comes out of heart, then there will be transformation.

Through transformation we will get the bliss [ananda]. That bliss only will confer self-realization. So, self-realization is essential. (Swami: Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?) We should question ourselves, "Who am I? Who am I?" (Swami: Am I the body?) "Am I the body?" No! (Swami: This is my body) If I am the body, I say, "This is my body." (Swami: This is my body means: body is separate from body) When I say, "This is my body, I am separate from my body." (Swami: My mind) I say, "This is my mind." (Swami: Mind is separate from body) "Mind is separate from my body." (Swami: Mind is separate from mine) "I am different from my mind." "Then who am I?" (Swami: This is my body) This is my body. (Swami: My mind) My mind. (Swami: My buddhi, my senses, but, "Who am I?" put a question) I say this is, "My mind, my body, my intellect." Then ask yourself, "Who am I?" (Swami: Who am I? I am I) Then you should say, "I am I." (Swami: I am not body) I am not the body. (Swami: I am not the mind) I am not the mind. (Swami: Mind, body only instruments) Mind body etcetera are instruments. (Swami: I am the owner. I am the master) I am the owner. I am the master. (Swami: I am atma) Therefore, I am atma.

Make use of all the instruments. Proceed with the feelings of the self, then you can experience the true self. The body may change. Mind is sure to change. (Swami: Body is like a water bubble) Body is like a water bubble. (Swami: Mind is like a mad monkey) Mind is a mad monkey. (Swami: Don't follow the mind) Never follow the mind. (Swami: Don't follow the body) Don't follow the body. (Swami: Follow the conscience) Follow the conscience. (Swami: That is atma) That is the true self. Follow your conscience.

Body is needed. Body is an instrument. Because of the body you could practice thus far. There is mind. Don't entertain bad thoughts in your mind. All the actions done with the body, all the thinking faculty of the mind, divert them towards God's side. (Swami: Work will be transformed into worship) Then work will be transformed into worship. What all, that you do, consider it as acts of worship. Never divide, that this is my work and that is God's work. Every work, any work is just God's work. (Swami: God's work) Is God's work. When we go with that feeling we can easily understand spirituality.

Never give a scope that this is mine [ahamkara]. (Swami: That is ego) That is ego. You shouldn't have ego. So far there is ego you cannot accomplish anything. You should be very humble. You should have that humility and obedience. When there is humility, then you will have all potentialities and capacities. So long there is ego nothing you can achieve. So, so get away from ego. Develop all obedience and humility.

To think of the Lord, who is all-pervasive is most essential. (Swami: Hmmm, santhosha).

From tomorrow, if devotees have any doubts, it is very essential that they should get their doubts clarified. Westerners come here with very high expectations. We should give them scope and opportunity. They have no idea of Indian culture. What do you mean by culture? What is the difference between Indian culture and Western culture? In Swami's view there is no difference whatsoever. (Swami: Only words differences) There is only difference in words, nomenclature. But the material is one and the same.

Englishman may say it is 'water'. A hindi person calls it 'pani'. A telugu fellow calls it 'neru'. Tamilian calls it 'thanni'. A sanskrit person calls it 'vari'. (Swami: Water is water) Only there is change in words, but water is water. Water is just the water. (Swami: God is one) God is one. (Swami: Goal is one) Goal is one. But names and forms differ. That is unity in diversity. (Swami: Jewels are many) Jewels are many, (Swami: But gold is one) but gold is one. (Swami: Beings are many) beings are many, (Swami: But breath is one) but breath is one. (Swami: Stars are many) stars are many, (Swami: But sky is one) but sky is one. (Swami: Nations are many) nations are many, (Swami: Earth is one) Earth is one. We should establish strongly that unity in diversity. There is no difference at all.

There is no differences whatsoever among the congregation here: the British, Italians - (Swami: One big room). Here only there is only big, one big house. (Swami: Universe is one big house) The entire Universe is one big house. (Swami: America one room) America is in one room. (Swami: Italy one room) Italy is in one room. (Swami: UK one room) UK is in one room. All different countries are in rooms. In a big mansion these are all sorts of rooms. A small example.

Here is a big house. That is the dining hall, here is the drawing room, that is bedroom, that is bath room, that is kitchen. There are differences here. But when do you get the differences. Only the walls, compartmentrise these things. When you cut out the walls, there will be only single hall. No rooms - there are no differences. Then where do you get differences? Because of the upadhis, the walls is an obstacle. When you remove the walls, everything will be one. (Swami: Everything is one) We have to remove the walls of ego [ahamkara]. When you remove the walls of ego, the dining hall, bathroom, kitchen room, everything becomes one. So, we have to get away from ego. (Swami: Only love, love, love, love) We should only develop love and love only. (Swami: Love is God - live in love) So, Swami says, "Love is God - live in love." Only through this love you can resolve all differences.

We have devotees coming from UK, Russia, China, US - the relationship here is only love. (Swami: Only love, love is one) Love is one. When there is no love - you don't need to come here spending a lot of money and bearing all inconveniences. Out of love you are not bothered of other inconveniences. At their residences, where they have separate drawing room, separate bedroom, separate dressing room, they don't have satisfaction. But here where no comforts are present, all adjust. They understand. Their adjustment and understanding amount to very big spiritual practice [sadhana]. Sacrificing all conveniences, they try to enjoy the bliss. It is only that bliss that unifies. So, in England each one has one separate room - all are adjusting in single room. As they adjust in single room, they should also adjust with the spirit of love. That spirit of love is essential. That spirit of love is spirituality. (Swami: Split of love is science) Split of love is science.
